Abstract
The purpose of this research is to systematically and thoroughly describe the film scoring production process in Arsanuka, a film created by students of the Field Work Course (Kuliah Kerja Lapangan/KKL) from the Music Education Study Program at Universitas Negeri Jakarta, class of 2018. This research is considered important due to the lack of serious attention toward film music production at the higher education level, despite its significant potential in project-based learning. The Research Method used is a descriptive qualitative approach with data collected through semi-structured interviews, documentation, and literature review. The object of the research is the music production process in the film Arsanuka, which is analyzed through six main stages based on Richard Davis’s theory: spotting, composing, orchestrating, recording, syncing, and mixing-mastering. The results indicate that the film scoring process in Arsanuka was successfully carried out in a structured and collaborative manner, despite facing major challenges such as limited recoding facilities, adaptations due to the covid-19 pandemic, and the absence of a dedicated film music course at the time of production. The music in this film was not merely composed as a background element, but served as the narrative backbone, replacing most of the dialogue and defining the emotional structure of the story. The spotting process was conducted during the scriptwriting phase, reflecting a music-driven approach to storytelling. The musical composition incorporates strong Sundanese idioms, enriched with leitmotif techniques, hybrid orchestration, and a combination of live and digital recording methods. This research is expected to contribute academically to the development of film music studies and serve as a practical reference for students and filmmakers in crafting effective and contextually relevant film scoring.
