Abstract

This study aims to analyze the representation of the ikumen phenomenon and the challenges of fatherhood through the character Loid Forger in the anime Spy x Family by Tatsuya Endo. This research uses a literary sociology approach and applies Stuart Hall’s (2013) constructivist representation theory. The research data consist of scenes that show a father’s involvement in child care and household work, as well as the challenges he faces. The data are analyzed based on dialogue, character actions, and supporting visual elements. Data were collected using observation and note-taking methods and analyzed through descriptive-analytical analysis. The results show that Loid Forger represents the ikumen phenomenon through his active involvement in child care, such as spending time with his child, giving emotional support, taking part in learning and play activities, and taking time off work for his child. In addition, Loid is also shown participating in household tasks, such as cooking and shopping for daily needs. However, this ikumen representation is not free from structural challenges, including a lack of support from the workplace and social pressure in public spaces. Therefore, Spy x Family represents ikumen as an actively involved father while also showing the social barriers that limit fathers’ involvement in child care in contemporary Japanese society.
