Abstract
Thompson. ***** This study investigates the survival strategies of graveyard workers at the Pondok Ranggon Public Cemetery (TPU) in East Jakarta in facing these economic and social challenges. Although they play a critical role in providing funeral services, this group of workers is often marginalized and receives limited attention from both the public and the government. This research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. Data were gathered through in-depth interviews, field observation, and documentation involving workers categorized as Individual Service Providers (PJLP) and Daily Contract Workers (PHL). The research was conducted from May to August 2025. The research subjects consisted of 8 individuals: 3 PJLP, 3 PHL, 1 administrator, 1 security guard and and two bereaved family members. The findings indicate that the economic conditions of graveyard workers tend to be unstable, particularly for those working daily without a fixed contract. In addition to enduring heavy physical labor, they also confront social stigma and marginalization inherent in their profession. To maintain their livelihood, the workers implement various adaptive strategies, such as seeking additional work outside working hours, utilizing social networks among fellow workers, and building good relationships with the heirs of the deceased as a form of social capital. These strategies illustrate how they negotiate structural limitations through forms of active, passive, and network adaptations, as explained by John W. Bennett’s theory of adaptive strategies and grounded in the principles of the Moral Economy by E.P. Thompson. This study demonstrates that graveyard workers are not merely victims of socio-economic injustice, but also actors capable of creatively adapting to maintain their moral existence and dignity. The findings are expected to serve as consideration for local government and social institutions in designing policies more favorable to improving the welfare of informal sector workers, particularly in the funeral services sector.
