Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui makna dari puisi Prometheus karya Johann Wolfgang von Goethe menggunakan kajian semiotika Michael Riffaterre dengan teknik analisis data yang meliputi deskripsi puisi, pembacaan heuristik, identifikasi ketidaklangsungan ekspresi, dan pembacaan hermeneutik, untuk memahami makna puisi. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif deskriptif, dengan sumber data puisi Prometheus yang diterjemahkan oleh Richard Stokes. Data penelitian berupa kata, frasa, dan kalimat dalam setiap bait puisi Prometheus. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan makna dari 7 bait dalam puisi ini. Melalui pembacaan heuristik diperlihatkan makna harfiah puisi ini yang merupakan deklarasi tegas tentang otonomi diri manusia yang menentang kekuasaan ilahi. Melalui identifikasi ketidaklangsungan ekspresi, puisi ini menampilkan upaya Prometheus mendegradasi otoritas Zeus, membalik hierarki dewa, dan menegaskan supremasi pengalaman serta kreativitas manusia. Pembacaan hermeneutik memperkuat pesan bahwa manusia adalah makhluk yang merdeka, terbentuk oleh perjuangan dan pengalaman, dan berhak mendefinisikan dirinya tanpa tunduk pada otoritas tradisional yang menekan. Berdasarkan analisis puisi menurut kajian semiotika Riffaterre dapat diketahui makna puisi Prometheus. Puisi ini menampilkan pernyataan yang menegaskan gagasan kemandirian dan kebebasan manusia melalui penolakan terhadap otoritas ilahi dan tradisional. Goethe menggambarkan Prometheus sebagai simbol manusia yang dibentuk oleh pengalaman, penderitaan, dan kekuatan batin, bukan oleh belas kasihan dewa. Puisi ini mencerminkan semangat Sturm und Drang yang menempatkan emosi, kreativitas, dan tanggung jawab individu sebagai dasar utama pembentukan eksistensi manusia. Kata Kunci: Prometheus, makna, puisi, semiotika, Michael Riffaterre **** This study aims to determine the meaning of the poem Prometheus by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe using Michael Riffaterre’s semiotic framework. The data analysis techniques include poem description, heuristic reading, identification of indirect expression, and hermeneutic reading to uncover the poem's deeper significance. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method, utilizing the poem Prometheus translated by Richard Stokes as the primary data source. The research data consists of words, phrases, and sentences within each stanza of the poem. The results reveal the meaning across the seven stanzas of the poem. Through heuristic reading, the literal meaning is shown to be a firm declaration of human autonomy defying divine power. Through the identification of indirect expression, the poem portrays Prometheus's efforts to degrade Zeus's authority, invert the divine hierarchy, and assert the supremacy of human experience and creativity. Hermeneutic reading reinforces the message that humans are free beings, shaped by struggle and experience, and have the right to define themselves without submitting to oppressive traditional authority. Based on the analysis using Riffaterre’s semiotic study, the meaning of Prometheus asserts the ideas of human independence and freedom through the rejection of divine and traditional authority. Goethe depicts Prometheus as a symbol of humanity formed by experience, suffering, and inner strength rather than divine mercy. The poem reflects the spirit of Sturm und Drang, which places emotion, creativity, and individual responsibility as the primary foundation for human existence.
