Abstract
***** This study examines the politeness of directive speech acts in the film Big World (小小的我) based on Zhou and Zhang’s (2018) politeness framework. Directive speech acts have the potential to convey coerciveness if not expressed appropriately; therefore, they need to be analyzed within a contextual and culturally grounded framework of Mandarin politeness. This study aims to describe the types of directive speech acts used by the characters Liu Chunhe and his grandmother and to classify these utterances according to Zhou and Zhang’s four maxims, Modesty, Respectfulness, Friendliness, and Refinement. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method. The data consist of directive utterances produced by the two characters, collected through documentation, observation, and note-taking techniques. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that Liu Chunhe produces 23 directive utterances, predominantly invitations, while the grandmother produces 50 directive utterances, mainly commands. In terms of politeness, most utterances fall under the Friendliness Maxim, whereas the Modesty Maxim appears only in Chunhe’s speech. These findings indicate that the politeness of directive speech acts in the film is contextual and oriented toward social relationships and contemporary Chinese cultural norms.
