Abstract

***** This study investigated the difficulties faced by seventh-grade students at SMPN 7 Jakarta in writing descriptive texts and the strategies they employ to address these difficulties. The participants were 36 seventh-grade students, and the data were collected through classroom observations, interviews with eight selected students, and an analysis of students’ difficulties supported by questionnaires. The data were analyzed to identify recurring challenges related to linguistic, cognitive, and psychological aspects of writing, as well as the strategies used by students to overcome these challenges. The findings indicated that students experienced difficulties in grammatical accuracy, vocabulary use, sentence construction, and basic writing mechanics. In line with Hyland’s (2019) theory of writing as a socially and cognitively situated process, the results show that students’ difficulties were influenced not only by limited linguistic knowledge but also by their lack of confidence, limited writing practice, and insufficient awareness of audience and purpose. To cope with these difficulties, students employed several strategies, such as using simple sentence structures, relying on translation from their first language, using media, consulting dictionaries, and seeking assistance from peers and teachers. The findings of this study imply that English teachers should provide more guided writing practices, explicit feedback, and strategy-based instruction to help students develop both linguistic competence and effective writing strategies in producing descriptive texts.
