Abstract
***** This study aims to examine the dynamics of boom bap hip-hop rap in Indonesia from 1994 to 2020. The boom bap rap genre, known for its distinctive rhythmic patterns on the kick drum and snare drum, developed in Indonesia not only as a musical phenomenon, but also as a form of social, political, and cultural expression of the urban youth generation. This study aims to examine the dynamics of the evolution of the boom bap rap genre from the old school era to the new school era, as well as to examine how the development of the hip-hop community has influenced the acceptance, production, and distribution of the genre in Indonesia. This study employs a historical method with a descriptive-narrative approach, encompassing the stages of topic selection, source collection, verification, interpretation, and historiography. Primary sources consist of interviews with Indonesian Hip-hop musicians, namely Saykoji and Tuan Tigabelas, as well as contemporary newspapers, photographs, videos, and music albums. Secondary sources include books, journals, magazines, and relevant articles. The research findings show that the dynamics of boom bap in Indonesia are divided into three main periods. The 1994-2000 period was marked by the initial identity formation phase through the emergence of pioneering figures such as Iwa K and Denada, where boom bap was not only adopted but directly confronted the sociopolitical conditions of the New Order that shaped its expressive character. The 2000-2010 period was a time of aesthetic consolidation and the formation of local identities, marked by a growing awareness of the importance of localization, the development of independent communities, and the influence of digital technology in music production. The 2010-2020 period witnessed the transformation of boom bap through digital adaptation and genre hybridization, where creative collectives such as ONAR and Westwew played a crucial role in maintaining boom bap's relevance amidst the dominance of trap and other modern Hip-hop styles. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 also accelerated the digitalization of the Indonesian Hip-hop music ecosystem as a whole.
