Abstract
***** This study aims to examine PPKN students’ perceptions of their understanding of the death penalty for corruption crimes based on Pancasila values. The study employed a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. The research was conducted from January to May 2026 at the Pancasila and Civic Education Study Program (PPKN), Jakarta State University, and the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). The research subjects were 2023 cohort PPKN students of Jakarta State University, supported by key informants and an expert informant. Data were collected through interviews and documentation, then analyzed through data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. Data validity was tested using theory triangulation. The analysis was conducted using Fritz Heider’s Social Perception Theory, Pellegrino Rossi’s Combined Theory of Punishment, and the Concept of Civic Knowledge. The findings indicate that students understand the death penalty as the most severe form of punishment that serves to create a deterrent effect and demonstrate the state's firmness in combating corruption. Most students support the implementation of the death penalty for corruptors because it is perceived as capable of promoting social justice and preventing corruption. This support is associated with the values of unity, democracy, and social justice, while opposition is related to the values of divinity and humanity. The findings further reveal that Pancasila values constitute the primary basis of students’ perceptions in assessing the implementation of the death penalty. This study concludes that students’ perceptions of their understanding of the death penalty for corruptors are shaped by their understanding of Pancasila values, social conditions, and the realities of law enforcement in Indonesia.
