Abstract

***** This study aims to develop a feasible and effective casual adaptive fashion product for adolescents with spastic quadriplegia Cerebral Palsy (CP) to realize the principle of fashion as empowerment. It was motivated by the high dependence of people with CP on caregivers during dressing and the limited availability of adaptive clothing that is both functional and non-stigmatizing. This research employed a research and development approach as a case study, applying the five stages of Design Thinking (Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test) and the Functional, Expressive, Aesthetic (FEA) Consumer Needs Model as the framework for needs analysis. The subjects were beneficiaries at UPTP Sentra Mulya Jaya Jakarta, with data collected through observation, interviews with caregivers and a physiotherapist, validation by fourteen multidisciplinary expert panelists, and product trials. The study produced five items, namely three tops and two bottoms, with main adaptive features: magnetic snap buttons sewn on the inner fabric, a set-in-less (kimono) sleeve construction, side or wide-neckline openings, and modular motifs. The feasibility test showed the products were categorized as Highly Feasible with a score of 93.04%, and all FEA dimensions exceeded 92%. The effectiveness test showed a 25-35% reduction in caregiver dependence, the emergence of independent initiative, and more positive emotional responses from the subjects. This study concludes that appropriately designed clothing can transform from a barrier into a means of empowerment that enhances the independence and self-esteem of people with Cerebral Palsy.
