Abstract
***** This study aims to explore the struggle and consistency of a taekwondo athlete in dominating national-level championships for eight consecutive years, including the supporting factors, challenges encountered, and implications for future athlete development and regeneration. This research employed a qualitative approach using an autoethnographic method, focusing on the researcher’s subjective experiences as a taekwondo athlete who successfully maintained consistent achievements at the national level. Data were collected through self-reflection, personal experience records, achievement documentation, training archives, and participant observation throughout training and competition processes. The findings reveal that the athlete’s eight-year dominance was not an instant achievement but rather the result of a long, systematic, and sustainable development process. Several factors contributed to this success, including anthropometric characteristics that provided biomechanical advantages, optimal physical condition consisting of endurance, strength, speed, and flexibility, as well as psychological aspects such as motivation, self-confidence, discipline, and stress management abilities. In addition to these internal factors, success was also supported by a structured athlete development system, the proper implementation of training principles, and a competitive and supportive training environment. Furthermore, the study found that the athlete development process experienced by the researcher reflected the principles of Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD), which emphasizes gradual and sustainable athlete growth. The challenges encountered throughout the achievement journey included pressure to maintain performance, physical fatigue, injury risks, psychological pressure during competitions, weight management, and training burnout. The study concludes that long-term athletic performance consistency is the result of a synergistic interaction among anthropometric factors, physical condition, psychological aspects, and a supportive athlete development system. Among these factors, the psychological aspect emerged as the most dominant element in maintaining performance consistency and overcoming various challenges throughout the athlete’s sporting career.
