Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskpripsikan perjuangan Istri Sedar untuk memerdekakan kaum perempuan pada masa pergerakan nasional, serta menganalisis bagaimana Istri Sedar melakukan feminisme dalam konsep pergerakan perempuan yang terjadi pada periode aktif pergerakan nasional. Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh ketertarikan peneliti sebagai perempuan abad modern, untuk melihat dan menelusuri bagaimana kaum perempuan di masa lalu mengimplementasikan semangat juang kemerdekaan perempuan di masa Indonesia sebelum merdeka. Sebab penelitian terlebih dahulu menyoroti peran-peran terhadap majalah yang dikeluarkan oleh Istri Sedar. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode historis yang bersifat deskriptifnaratif dengan lima tahapan, yaitu pemilihan topik, heuristik, verifikasi, interpretasi, dan historiografi. Sumber primer dari penelitian ini didapatkan dari surat kabar majalah yang diterbitkan oleh Istri Sedar selama aktif berorganisasi dengan judul “Majalah Sedar” terbitan tahun 1930-1940. Data yang diperoleh kemudian diolah melalui analisis deskriptif untuk memaparkan latar belakang Istri Sedar, visi misi, serta tujuan Istri Sedar dalam melakukan feminisme, lalu kondisi sosial yang terjadi pada masa Istri Sedar aktif. Kemudian ditelaah dengan deskriptif naratif untuk menelusuri perwujudan bagaimana Istri Sedar melakukan gerakan feminisme dalam pergerakan perempuan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kondisi perempuan pada saat itu sangatlah sulit sehingga Istri Sedar turun untuk bersikeras mengubah nasib perempuan Indonesia dengan mengkritik keras poligami, membuka kelas kursus buruh, juga mendirikan sekolah rakyat bernama HISS. ***** This study aims to describe the struggle of Istri Sedar in liberating women during the national movement era, as well as to analyze how Istri Sedar practiced feminism within the concept of women’s movements during the active period of the national struggle. The research is motivated by the researcher’s interest, as a modern-era woman, in exploring how women in the past implemented the spirit of women’s emancipation in Indonesia before independence. The study first highlights the roles reflected in the magazine published by Istri Sedar. This research employs a historical method with a descriptive-narrative approach, consisting of five stages: topic selection, heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography. The primary sources were obtained from magazines published by Istri Sedar during its organizational activities, entitled Majalah Sedar, issued between 1930 and 1940. The collected data were processed through descriptive analysis to present the background, vision, mission, and objectives of Istri Sedar in carrying out feminism, as well as the social conditions during its active period. Furthermore, descriptive and narrative was applied to trace how Istri Sedar embodied feminist movements within the broader women’s struggle. The findings reveal that women’s conditions at the time were extremely difficult, prompting Istri Sedar to persistently fight for change by strongly criticizing polygamy, opening labor courses, and establishing a public school called HISS.
