Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memahami dan mendeskripsikan aspirasi pendidikan masyarakat Suku Asmat di Kabupaten Asmat, Papua Selatan, melalui pendekatan etnografi. Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh rendahnya keberlanjutan pendidikan masyarakat Asmat yang dipengaruhi oleh faktor geografis, sosial, ekonomi, dan budaya. Di tengah keterbatasan akses pendidikan formal, masyarakat Asmat tetap memiliki harapan terhadap pendidikan sebagai sarana peningkatan kualitas hidup, penguatan karakter, serta pelestarian identitas budaya dan nilai-nilai adat. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan etnografi interpretatif. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara mendalam, observasi partisipatif, dan dokumentasi, kemudian dianalisis secara tematik. Fokus penelitian meliputi makna pendidikan bagi masyarakat Asmat, bentuk-bentuk aspirasi pendidikan, faktor-faktor yang memengaruhinya, serta peran nilai budaya dalam pembentukan aspirasi tersebut. Kajian ini menunjukkan bahwa pendidikan bagi masyarakat Asmat tidak hanya dimaknai sebagai sarana memperoleh pengetahuan dan pekerjaan, tetapi juga sebagai ruang pembentukan tanggung jawab sosial, penguatan nilai komunal, dan keberlanjutan budaya. Aspirasi pendidikan masyarakat Asmat mencakup aspirasi akademik, ekonomi, sosial, dan pengembangan diri yang dipengaruhi oleh kondisi geografis, ekonomi keluarga, dukungan sosial, pengalaman belajar, serta nilai adat. Nilai-nilai seperti solidaritas komunal, penghormatan terhadap leluhur, keterikatan dengan alam, dan kearifan lokal berperan penting dalam membentuk cara masyarakat memandang pendidikan dan masa depan anak. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa aspirasi pendidikan masyarakat Asmat merupakan konstruksi sosial-budaya yang lahir dari pertemuan antara kebutuhan terhadap pendidikan modern dan keinginan mempertahankan identitas budaya. Oleh karena itu, pendidikan di wilayah Asmat perlu dikembangkan secara kontekstual, partisipatif, dan berbasis budaya lokal. Kata Kunci: aspirasi pendidikan, Suku Asmat, etnografi, masyarakat adat, pendidikan berbasis budaya. ***** This study aims to understand and describe the educational aspirations of the Asmat people in Asmat Regency, South Papua, through an ethnographic approach. The study is motivated by the low continuity of education among the Asmat community, which is influenced by geographical, social, economic, and cultural factors. Despite limited access to formal education, the Asmat people continue to hold strong aspirations for education as a means of improving quality of life, strengthening personal character, and preserving cultural identity and traditional values. This research employs an interpretive ethnographic approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation, and were subsequently analyzed using thematic analysis. The study focuses on the meaning of education for the Asmat community, the forms of educational aspirations they hold, the factors influencing those aspirations, and the role of cultural values in shaping them. The findings indicate that education for the Asmat people is not merely perceived as a means of acquiring knowledge and securing better employment opportunities, but also as a space for developing social responsibility, strengthening communal values, and sustaining cultural continuity. The educational aspirations of the Asmat community encompass academic, economic, social, and self-development aspirations, which are influenced by geographical conditions, family economic circumstances, social support, learning experiences, and customary values. Cultural values such as communal solidarity, respect for ancestors, attachment to nature, and local wisdom play a significant role in shaping how the Asmat people perceive education and the future of their children. This study concludes that the educational aspirations of the Asmat community constitute a socio-cultural construct arising from the interaction between the need for modern education and the desire to preserve cultural identity. Therefore, educational development in the Asmat region should be contextualized, participatory, and grounded in local cultural values to ensure its relevance and sustainability.
