Abstract
***** This study aims to analyze the relationship between meteorological conditions and the burn severity of forest and land fires based on the Relativized Burn Ratio (RBR) index derived from Sentinel-2 imagery in Nusa Tenggara Timur Province in 2024, with parameters analyzed including air temperature, relative humidity, rainfall, and wind speed. A descriptive quantitative method was applied, incorporating remote sensing techniques, spatial overlay analysis, and weighted Spearman correlation tests. Validation of the RBR classification against reference data yielded an Overall Accuracy of 98.47% and a Kappa Coefficient of 0.3641. Classification results indicate that burn severity is concentrated in Sumba Timur Regency and several areas of West Timor, with the peak period of forest and land fire occurrence in July–October and the largest burned area recorded in September. Spatial overlay analysis reveals that annual rainfall shows the most consistent spatial association, with low-rainfall areas consistently exhibiting larger burned extents across all severity classes. Weighted Spearman correlation tests indicate that three of four parameters were statistically significant to fire severity: relative humidity (ρ = +0.230), air temperature (ρ = −0.153), and rainfall (ρ = −0.108), while wind speed yielded no significant correlation at the analytical scale used. Air temperature showed a negative correlation while relative humidity showed a positive correlation with fire severity, because conducive temperature and humidity conditions (heat) alone were insufficient to produce high severity without adequate vegetative fuel availability (fuel), such that the spatial distribution of fire severity was more strongly shaped by the simultaneous interaction among all meteorological parameters and fuel, consistent with the fire triangle principle.
