Abstract

****] This study aims to identify the pattern of fiqh legal understanding regarding adornment and the attitudes of Muslim female students at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Law, Universitas Negeri Jakarta (FISH UNJ), toward the eyelash extension trend. This study employed a descriptive quantitative approach with purposive sampling technique. The sample consisted of 41 active Muslim female students at FISH UNJ who were aware of or had previously used eyelash extensions. Data were collected through a questionnaire comprising a Guttman Scale to measure the pattern of fiqh legal understanding, a Likert Scale to measure attitudes, and open-ended questions as supporting data. Data were analyzed descriptively in the form of percentages and categorization. The theoretical frameworks applied include Fazlur Rahman's Double Movement theory for analyzing the pattern of legal understanding, Ajzen's Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) for analyzing attitudes, and Stuart Hall's Encoding/Decoding theory as an integrative analytical framework. The results indicate that: (1) the pattern of fiqh legal understanding among Muslim female students of FISH UNJ is dominated by a contextual approach at 48.8%, followed by a balanced approach at 31.7%, and a textual approach at 19.5%, (2) student attitudes are predominantly in the high category at 82.9%, reflecting a rejection of the eyelash extension trend grounded in strong religious awareness. Overall, this study finds that a contextual pattern of understanding does not lead to permissive attitudes; rather, it reinforces rejection through more diverse and well-founded arguments.
