Abstract

Penelitian ini membahas praktik cosplaying sebagai fenomena dramaturgi di ruang publik dengan studi di wilayah Jabodetabek. Cosplaying dipahami sebagai praktik menampilkan diri yang dilakukan cosplayer melalui kostum, make-up, wig, properti, gestur, pose, dan interaksi dengan audiens. Ketika tampil di event cosplay, mall, festival budaya populer, maupun media sosial, cosplayer tidak hanya merepresentasikan karakter tertentu, tetapi juga mengelola kesan di hadapan masyarakat. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode deskriptif. Data diperoleh melalui wawancara mendalam, observasi, dan dokumentasi terhadap cosplayer generasi z yang aktif mengikuti event cosplay di Jabodetabek. Analisis menggunakan perspektif dramaturgi Erving Goffman, terutama konsep presentasi diri, impression management, front stage, back stage, dan audiens. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa cosplayer mengelola kesan melalui penampilan visual, pembawaan diri, batas interaksi, dan media sosial sebagai ruang presentasi diri. Respons sosial berupa apresiasi, rasa penasaran, stereotip, dan stigma membuat cosplayer menyesuaikan cara tampil serta membedakan identitas sehari-hari dengan identitas saat cosplaying ***** Aryo Anargya Hakim Putra, Cosplaying in Public Space: A Dramaturgical Analysis of Subcultural Practices, Thesis, Jakarta: Sociology Education Study Program, Faculty of Social Sciences and Law, Jakarta State University, 2026.This study examines the practice of cosplaying as a dramaturgical phenomenon in public spaces, focusing on the Jabodetabek region. Cosplaying is understood as a form of self-presentation enacted through costumes, make-up, wigs, props, gestures, poses, and audience interactions. When performing at cosplay events, malls, pop culture festivals, or on social media, cosplayers do not merely represent specific characters but also manage impressions before the public. This research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. Data were gathered through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation involving Generation Z cosplayers who actively participate in events across Jabodetabek. The analysis utilizes Erving Goffman’s dramaturgical perspective, specifically the concepts of self-presentation, impression management, front stage, back stage, and the audience. The findings reveal that cosplayers manage impressions through visual appearance, demeanor, interaction boundaries, and the use of social media as a space for self-presentation. Social responses—ranging from appreciation and curiosity to stereotypes and stigma—prompt cosplayers to adjust their performance styles and distinguish between their everyday identities and their cosplaying personas.
