Abstract

***** This study experimentally examined the role of informational conformity on individuals' trust in government in the context of disaster management in Indonesia. In ambiguous disaster situations, individuals tend to rely on others' assessments as a reference for reality (informational social influence), such that public trust is not solely formed through independent performance evaluation. A total of 112 Indonesian citizens were randomly assigned to a control group (n = 52) and a manipulation group (n = 60). The manipulation group received disaster scenario vignettes with statistical information indicating that the majority of affected residents and volunteers rated the government's response as sufficiently effective. Trust was measured using the CTGO Scale (competence, benevolence, integrity). An independent samples t-test revealed a significant difference between groups (t(110) = −3.426; p < .001), with the manipulation group's mean score (M = 33.87) significantly higher than the control group (M = 28.92). Informational conformity significantly increased trust in government, particularly when information came from sources perceived to have direct knowledge of the situation.
