Abstract

***** This study aims to determine the effect of loneliness on problematic internet use among college students in the Greater Jakarta area. College students are a group vulnerable to loneliness due to the demands and changes associated with the transition from adolescence to early adulthood. On the other hand, high levels of exposure to, access to, and use of the internet among college students can increase the risk of problematic internet use. This study employs a quantitative approach with a correlational design using a survey. The study participants consisted of 260 active college students aged 18–25 who are enrolled in the Jabodetabek area and use the internet for more than 3 hours per day. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling. Loneliness was measured using the UCLA Loneliness Scale Version 3, while problematic internet use was measured using the Generalized Problematic Internet Use Scale 2 (GPIUS2). Data were analyzed using Pearson’s correlation and simple linear regression. The results indicate a significant positive relationship between loneliness and problematic internet use (r = 0.336; p < 0.001). Regression analysis showed that loneliness had a positive and significant effect on problematic internet use (β = 0.336; t = 5.730; p < 0.001) with a coefficient of determination of 0.113. This indicates that loneliness accounts for 11.3% of the variance in problematic internet use, while the remaining 88.7% is influenced by other factors. The higher the level of loneliness felt by college students, the higher the incidence of problematic internet use.
