Abstract
***** This study aims to analyze differences in self-presentation strategies across five dimensions, namely ingratiation, intimidation, self-promotion, exemplification, and supplication, between first account and second account users among early adults on Instagram, based on Jones and Pittman's (1982) taxonomy of self-presentation strategies. This study employed a quantitative approach with a within-subject comparative design involving 385 early adult participants aged 18 to 25 years who actively used both a first account and a second account on Instagram simultaneously, selected through purposive sampling via online questionnaire distribution. The instrument used was the Online Self-Presentation Scale developed by Arnani and Nindhita based on Jones and Pittman's (1982) theory comprising 20 items, with data analysis conducted using Paired Samples T-Test through IBM SPSS Statistics 29. The results indicate that all five dimensions of self-presentation strategies showed significant differences between the first account and second account, where the ingratiation strategy was more dominant on the first account while intimidation, exemplification, self-promotion, and supplication strategies were more dominant on the second account, with the largest difference found in the supplication dimension reflecting that the second account serves as the primary space for early adults to express vulnerability and emotional support needs that cannot be freely displayed on the first account. Overall, these findings confirm that early adults manage two distinct digital social stages with different self-presentation strategies according to the audience context and privacy level of each account.
