Abstract
The phenomenon of sadfishing commonly occurs among individuals in emerging adulthood, a developmental stage characterized by identity exploration. Sadfishing can have negative consequences for both those who post such content and those who view it. This study aims to examine the effect of loneliness on sadfishing tendencies among emerging adults, with preference of online social interaction as a mediator. This study employed a quantitative approach involving 313 respondents aged 18–24 years in Indonesia. Participants were recruited using a convenience sampling. Data were analyzed using PROCESS Macro Hayes model 4. The results indicated that preference of online social interaction mediated the effect of loneliness on sadfishing tendencies among emerging adults (B = 0,188; 95% CI = 0,088 - 0,300). Furthermore, the non-significant direct effect suggested an indirect-only mediation model. Loneliness experienced by individuals first increased their preference for engaging in online social interactions. In turn, this preference contributed to a greater tendency to engage in sadfishing behaviors among emerging adults.
