Abstract
***** This study was motivated by the increasing participation of women in the public sphere as informal sector workers, which has not been accompanied by a corresponding shift in the division of domestic roles within the family. Over time, this situation will lead to cumulative physical and psychological exhaustion among women in the informal sector. Under these circumstances, working women need to develop social coping strategies to survive and manage the stress they experience as a result of these dual roles. The research was conducted using a qualitative approach with a case study method. The study was conducted from October 2025 to January 2026 on Jalan Srengseng Raya, West Jakarta. The research process involved interviews with 5 female informal workers as key informants, 5 husbands of key informants, and 3 members of the local community as triangulation informants, as well as 7 others as additional informants. Data collection techniques included observation, interviews, and literature review. The research data obtained was analyzed using qualitative descriptive analysis techniques. The findings of this study were analyzed sociologically using role theory and the concept of social support proposed by House and Cobb. The results indicate that women in the informal sector simultaneously fulfill domestic and public roles, making their daily activities more demanding and complex. These conditions prompt the informants to employ various social coping strategies, utilizing the social capital they possess such as family support, environmental conditions, and work experience to help them persevere in their daily activities. These social coping strategies take the form of social support, such as emotional, instrumental, and informational support; validation; and the sense of not being alone and of being valued. However, the support received has not yet fully reduced the division of labor within the household, so women still bear the brunt of domestic work. In addition, this study also found social impacts in the form of role changes, reduced time for socializing, minor family conflicts, and physical and emotional exhaustion. On the other hand, informal work also has a positive economic impact because it helps meet family needs and improves the economic conditions of the informants’ households.
