Abstract
***** This study aimed to examine the relationship between meritocratic beliefs and student participation in collective action. The study employed a quantitative approach using a purposive sampling technique involving 613 undergraduate students aged 18 to 25 years who had participated in either internal or external campus organizations. Student participation in collective action was measured using the Activism Orientation Scale (AOS), while meritocratic beliefs were measured using the Meritocratic Perceptions and Preferences Measure. Data were analyzed using Spearman's rank-order correlation because the data did not meet the assumption of normality. The results indicated that the Perceptions Non-Merit dimension was not significantly associated with student participation in collective action (r = -0.037, p = 0.360). Likewise, the Preferences Non-Merit dimension was also not significantly associated with student participation in collective action (r = -0.023, p = 0.571). These findings suggest that meritocratic beliefs were not significantly related to student participation in collective action. Student participation in collective action may be more strongly influenced by other psychological factors, such as social identity, perceived injustice, collective efficacy, as well as social and cultural factors that shape students' orientations toward participation in democratic life.
