Abstract
***** Early adulthood demands psychological autonomy and a stable self-concept, yet some individuals have taken on caregiving responsibilities from a young age, a condition known as parentification, which may affect self-concept. This study aimed to examine the influence of parentification on self-concept among early adults in Indonesia. This study employed a quantitative approach with a simple linear regression design. The sample consisted of 343 early adults aged 18–40 years residing in Indonesia, selected through convenience sampling. Parentification was measured using the Parentification Inventory, while self-concept was measured using a self-concept scale that had been tested for validity and reliability. The results showed that parentification significantly predicted self-concept, F (1, 344) = 8.80, p = .003, with a positive regression coefficient (β = .158) and an R² value of .025, indicating that parentification accounted for 2.5% of the variance in self-concept. The higher the parentification, the higher the self-concept among early adults. It can be concluded that parentification influences self-concept in early adulthood within the context of Indonesia's collectivist culture.
