Abstract

***** This study aimed to examine the influence of AI companionship on loneliness among emerging adulthood ChatGPT users using a quantitative approach and hierarchical regression analysis. A total of 254 respondents aged 18–25 years who had used ChatGPT to share personal stories or seek emotional support were selected through purposive sampling. The study employed De Jong Gierveld Loneliness Scale (DJGLS) and the Machine Companionship Scale (MCS), which consists of the dimensions of eudaimonic exchange (EE) and connective coordination (CC), while gender and romantic relationship status were included as covariates. The results of the hierarchical regression analysis indicated that the overall model was significant (p = .001) and explained 7% of the variance in loneliness (R² = .070). The model testing results showed that the eudaimonic exchange (EE) dimension did not have a significant effect on loneliness and did not contribute significantly to the model. In contrast, the connective coordination (CC) dimension had a significant effect on loneliness and made a significant contribution to explaining loneliness among emerging adulthood ChatGPT users
