Abstract
***** This study aims to examine the relationship between each dimension of the Big Five personality model and loneliness among Generation Z. This is a quantitative study that employed accidental sampling. The participants in this study were 409 members of Generation Z. The measurement instruments used in this study were the 6-item De Jong Gierveld Loneliness Scale (DJGLS) to measure loneliness and the Big Five Inventory-2 Short (BFI2-S) to measure the Big Five personality traits. Hypothesis testing was conducted through correlation analysis. The results indicate a negative relationship between the personality traits of open-mindedness (p = 0.000, r = -0.189), conscientiousness (p = 0.000, r = -0.330), extraversion (p = 0.000, r = -0.339), and agreeableness (p = 0.000, r = -0.380) and loneliness. Additionally, there was a positive relationship between the personality trait of negative emotionality (p = 0.000, r = 0.476) and loneliness. The higher an individual’s score on any of the personality traits—openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, and agreeableness—the lower their level of loneliness, and vice versa. Furthermore, the higher an individual’s score on the negative emotionality personality trait, the higher their level of loneliness, and vice versa.
