Abstract

***** This study aims to determine the effect of emotional dependency on break up distress among emerging adults who have experienced the end of a romantic relationship. This study employed a quantitative approach using a survey method, involving 157 emerging adult respondents aged 18–25 years who had experienced a romantic breakup within the past six months, selected through a non-probability purposive sampling technique. Data were collected through an online questionnaire using the Break Up Distress Scale (BDS) and the Partner's Emotional Dependency Scale (SED), then analyzed using descriptive statistical tests, classical assumption tests, correlation tests, and hypothesis testing through simple linear regression analysis. The results showed that emotional dependency has a positive and significant effect on break up distress, thus the research hypothesis was accepted, with emotional dependency accounting for 31.2% of the effect while the remaining 68.8% was influenced by other factors outside this study. Additional analysis also showed that social support is associated with the level of break up distress, where individuals who did not receive social support tended to experience higher break up distress than those who received social support. It can therefore be concluded that emotional dependency is an important psychological factor contributing to the level of break up distress during emerging adulthood, so individuals need to build emotional independence in romantic relationships and strengthen social support in their surroundings.
