Abstract

************ The development of technology has driven the massive use of social media and given rise to a new phenomenon known as sadfishing. The tendency to engage in sadfishing is correlated with psychological conditions, namely perceived emotion invalidation and Fear of Missing Out. For this reason, this research aims to determine the influence of perceived emotion invalidation and FoMO on the tendency toward sadfishing. This research uses a quantitative method with a nonprobability sampling technique through convenience sampling, involving 306 social media users in the emerging adulthood phase. The results of multiple regression analysis shows that perceived emotion invalidation and Fear of Missing Out have a significant simultaneous influence on sadfishing tendency (F = 103.855; p < 0.001) with a contribution of 40.3% (Adjusted R² = 0.403). Moreover, partially perceived emotion invalidation and FoMO also significantly influence sadfishing tendency. Accordingly, the higher a level of perceived emotion invalidation and FoMO an individual has, the higher their tendency to engage in sadfishing.
