Abstract

***** Microbiology literacy is an important skill that enables students to understand the role of microorganisms in daily life, particularly in making decisions related to health and environmental issues. No test instrument has yet been specifically designed to comprehensively measure the microbiology literacy of high school students; therefore, there is a need to develop a valid, reliable, feasible, and practical instrument. This study aims to develop a microbiology literacy test instrument for 10th-grade high school students using the ADDIE model (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, Evaluate). The instrument was developed based on four dimensions of biological literacy nominal, functional, structural, and multidimensional, covering viruses, bacteria, and fungi, with PISA-style question formats. Validation by three experts yielded high validity in the content and language aspects, as well as moderate validity in the construct aspect. The practicality percentage rated by students was 83.6% (very high), while four biology teachers rated it as having moderate practicality in terms of content and benefits, and high practicality in terms of presentation. The first empirical test yielded a reliability coefficient of 0.88 with 27 valid items. A second empirical test on the revised items resulted in a final product of 30 test items. The final instrument was administered to 108 10th-grade students at SMAN 78 Jakarta via a CBT website. The results of the implementation showed that the average microbiology literacy proficiency fell into the “needs guidance” category, with the highest multidimensional scores and the lowest nominal scores. The resulting microbiology literacy test instrument is valid, reliable, appropriate, and practical for assessing the microbiology literacy skills of high school students.
