Abstract

***** Seafarers work in an environment characterized by high physical, psychological, and social demands, making them vulnerable to experiencing stress. Group cohesion is considered one of the factors that may help individuals cope with work-related pressures while working onboard. This study aimed to examine the effect of group cohesion on stress among seafarers. This research employed a quantitative correlational approach. The participants were 167 Indonesian seafarers who were actively working onboard and were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using the Indonesian adaptation of the Group Environment Questionnaire (GEQ) and the stress subscale of the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales-21 (DASS-21). Data were analyzed using multiple linear regression analysis. The results showed that the four dimensions of group cohesion simultaneously had a significant negative effect on stress among seafarers, accounting for 39.9% of the variance. However, partial analysis revealed that only the Individual Attractions to the Group–Task (ATG- T) and Group Integration–Social (GI-S) dimensions had significant negative effects on stress, whereas the Individual Attractions to the Group–Social (ATG- S) and Group Integration–Task (GI-T) dimensions did not show significant effects. These findings suggest that not all dimensions of group cohesion contribute equally to stress among seafarers.
