Abstract
***** This study aimed to analyze the effect of research and development (R&D) expenditure, leverage, activity ratio, operating cash flow, and profitability on financial distress. The population of this study consisted of textile and garment companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange during the 2020–2024 period. Through a purposive sampling technique, the final sample consisted of 97 financial statement observations from 20 companies after outlier trimming. Data were analyzed using panel data regression with EViews 13. The results indicated that R&D expenditure had no effect on financial distress. In contrast, leverage demonstrated a significant positive effect on financial distress. Meanwhile, activity ratio, operating cash flow, and profitability each had a significant negative effect on financial distress. This study provided theoretical implications by empirically supporting Signaling Theory in explaining the effects of leverage, activity ratio, operating cash flow, and profitability on financial distress, while Resource-Based View Theory was employed to examine the effect of R&D expenditure on financial distress. The findings suggested that companies could reduce the risk of financial distress by managing their capital structure, particularly financial leverage, to support operating activities, and by maintaining productive use of assets to generate sufficient sales, revenue, and operating cash flow to meet their obligations. Consequently, investors and creditors could use these financial ratios as considerations when making investment or lending decisions.
