Abstract
***** The high rate of online scam in Indonesia, particularly in the Jabodetabek region, along with the high level of social media use among the university student demographic, makes this an interesting problem to study. This study aims to examine the effect of trust in social media on scam victimisation risk on social media among university students residing in Jabodetabek. This study used a quantitative approach using a survey method. Sampling was conducted using a purposive sampling technique involving 384 active university student respondents aged 17-25 years residing in Jabodetabek who actively use social media. Data were collected through a questionnaire designed to measure two variables: scam victimisation risk, using the Scam Victimisation Risk (SVR-I) instrument, and trust in social media, measured using the Trust in Social Media Scale developed by Warner-søderholm et al. Data were analyzed using simple linear regression with the assistance of the SPSS program. The results show that trust in social media has a positive and significant effect on scam victimisation risk on social media. This indicates that the higher an individual’s trust in other users and social media platforms, the higher their risk of falling victim to scams. Therefore, specific interventions are needed to encourage critical thinking in receiving information and to foster habitual verification of information from parties encountered on social media.
