Abstract

***** The decline in green open spaces in urban areas threatens the sustainability of habitats for various bird species while also reducing opportunities for students to learn about biodiversity based on local resources. The Bekasi Urban Forest, as one of the remaining green open spaces, has the potential to serve as a source of contextual learning; however, the availability of digital learning resources that integrate local bird diversity with a microlearning approach remains limited. Given these conditions, there is a need for educational materials capable of strengthening students’ knowledge of local bird diversity, which is increasingly threatened by urbanization. This study aims to develop, assess the feasibility of, and test the effectiveness of the microlearning-based “Urban Birds” e-booklet in enhancing students’ knowledge of bird diversity in the Bekasi City Forest. This study employed the Research and Development (R&D) method using the Hannafin and Peck model, which includes the stages of needs analysis, product design, and development through a process of validation and revision. Validation was conducted by two subject matter experts, two media experts, and two language experts, accompanied by a product pilot test involving one biology teacher and 30 students. The data were analyzed using descriptive analysis to determine the media’s suitability level and Normalized Gain (N-gain) analysis to measure the increase in students’ knowledge. The results showed that the “Urban Birds” e-booklet achieved a very high suitability level based on validation components covering content, media, and language, and was therefore categorized as highly valid for use. The effectiveness test showed an increase in students’ knowledge of bird diversity, with a Normalized Gain value of 0.59, which falls into the moderate category. Recommendations for future research include developing an offline version and testing its effectiveness on a broader population.
