Abstract

***** This study examines the representation of women's oppression through Gothic elements in Tim Burton's Corpse Bride (2005). It aims to identify the Gothic elements depicted in the film and analyze how they represent women's oppression experienced by the female characters, Victoria Everglot and Emily. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach using textual and visual analysis. The data were collected from selected scenes, dialogues, subtitles, and visual elements in the film and analyzed using Roland Barthes' semiotic theory, Fred Botting's Gothic theory, Simone de Beauvoir's concept of the Other, and Sylvia Walby's theory of patriarchy. The findings reveal that Gothic elements, such as confinement, supernatural imagery, oppressive domestic space, female vulnerability, institutional authority, and psychological suffering, symbolize women's oppression. Victoria experiences oppression through arranged marriage, family control, and restricted autonomy, while Emily experiences patriarchal violence and objectification. The study concludes that Corpse Bride employs Gothic conventions not only as aesthetic features but also as a critique of patriarchal structures that restrict women's agency, identity, and freedom.
