Abstract

***** This study examined the mediating role of emptiness in the relationship between perceived environmental crowding and existential anxiety among metropolitan residents of Jabodetabek, Indonesia. A non-experimental quantitative design was employed with 268 respondents (aged 18–40) recruited via accidental sampling. Three cross-culturally adapted instruments were used: the Existential Anxiety Questionnaire (EAQ), Perceived Crowding Scale (PCS), and Multidimensional Sense of Emptiness Scale (MSES), analyzed through path analysis with bootstrapping (5,000 resamples) using Jamovi. Results showed: (1) perceived crowding negatively predicted emptiness (β = −0.144; p = .018); (2) emptiness positively predicted existential anxiety (β = 0.136; p < .001); and (3) the direct path from crowding to existential anxiety was non-significant (β = −0.112; p = .207). The indirect effect was significant (estimate = −0.128; p = .033; mediation = 53.5%), establishing emptiness as a full mediator.
