Abstract

Dalam relasi uchi, IFID didominasi keluarga bentuk ごめん; lima data menggunakan strategi tersebut secara tunggal, sedangkan Explanation or Account dan Taking on Responsibility masing-masing muncul pada lima data serta Offer of Repair pada satu data. Dalam relasi soto, IFID didominasi すみません, 失礼します, dan keluarga 申し訳ない, walaupun ごめんなさい juga muncul secara kontekstual; tiga data menggunakan strategi tunggal, sedangkan Explanation or Account muncul pada sebelas data, Offer of Repair pada lima data, dan Taking on Responsibility pada dua data. Promise of Forbearance tidak ditemukan. ***** Apologizing is an expressive speech act used to repair offenses and maintain interpersonal relations. In Japanese communication, apology forms and strategies are associated with the situationally constructed uchi-soto relationship. Brush Up Life was selected because it portrays Kondo Asami across changing relationships within its repeated-life narrative. This study describes Asami's apology strategies in uchi and soto relations and explains how these relations shape her choices. A qualitative descriptive method with a sociopragmatic approach was employed. The data comprised 32 apology utterances from the ten-episode drama, collected through non-participant observation and note-taking. Relations were first classified by frame, membership, closeness and interactional history, and hierarchy; the utterances were then analyzed using Olshtain and Cohen's five apology strategies. The analysis identified 15 uchi and 17 soto cases. An Illocutionary Force Indicating Device occurred in every case. In uchi relations, IFIDs were dominated by the ごめん family; five cases used this strategy alone, while Explanation or Account and Taking on Responsibility each occurred in five cases and Offer of Repair in one. In soto relations, IFIDs were dominated by すみません, 失礼します, and the 申し訳ない family, although ごめんなさい also occurred contextually; three cases used a single strategy, whereas Explanation or Account occurred in eleven cases, Offer of Repair in five, and Taking on Responsibility in two. Promise of Forbearance was absent. Uchi apologies tended to be concise and maintain closeness, whereas soto apologies more often used elaborated combinations to maintain politeness and manage distance or hierarchy. These tendencies were not absolute because form and strategy selection also depended on context, offense type, communicative purpose, and interactional history.
