Abstract

This study aimed to examine the effect of work engagement on burnout among hotel employees. A quantitative approach with a correlational and non-experimental design was employed. The participants were 158 active hotel employees aged at least 18 years, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through an online questionnaire using the 22-item Maslach-Trisni Burnout Inventory (M-TBI) and the 9-item Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES-9). The data were analyzed using simple linear regression with SPSS version 26. The results showed that burnout had a significant negative effect on work engagement among hotel employees, F(1, 156) = 22.768, p < .001. Burnout accounted for 12.7% of the variance in work engagement (R² = .127), while the remaining 87.3% was explained by other factors not examined in this study. The regression coefficient of -0.117 indicated that every one-unit increase in burnout was followed by a 0.117-unit decrease in work engagement. Therefore, higher burnout among hotel employees was associated with lower work engagement. These findings highlight the importance of managing workloads, working and rest schedules, supervisory support, and a work environment that promotes employees’ psychological well-being.
