Abstract

***** Individuals in the emerging adulthood stage are closely linked to their status as digital natives, making them vulnerable to experiencing an irrational fear of being detached from their mobile devices (Nomophobia). This study aims to determine the effect of Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) and Self-Esteem on Nomophobia in Emerging Adulthood. This study employed a quantitative approach. The research subjects consisted of emerging adults in Indonesia who own and use a smartphone as their primary device for daily activities and are actively engaged on visual or real-time interaction social media platforms (such as Instagram, Threads, TikTok, X, or WhatsApp). Data collection was conducted using the Indonesian adaptations of the Nomophobia Questionnaire (NMPQ-10), Online Fear of Missing Out (ON-FoMO) scale, and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES). Data were analyzed using multiple linear regression analysis. The results indicated that Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) and Self-Esteem simultaneously affected Nomophobia in emerging adults, contributing 17.5% to the variance. Crucially, on a partial basis, only Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) exerted a significant positive effect on Nomophobia, whereas Self-Esteem did not demonstrate any significant effect.
