Abstract

***** This research examines interpersonal trust in the live-action series Imawa no Kuni no Arisu Season 2 by Sato Shinsuke. This study aims to determine how interpersonal trust is represented in the series, particularly through the characters Arisu and Usagi, and to analyze the Japanese social norm factors that influence interpersonal trust between characters. This research was conducted because studies specifically addressing interpersonal trust between characters by integrating the psychosocial aspects of Japanese culture in extreme situations remain limited. This study employs a psychosocial literary approach with a qualitative descriptive method. Data collection techniques were carried out through literature review and note-taking observation techniques. The theoretical framework used includes Toshio Yamagishi's trust theory, focusing on interpersonal trust encompassing generalized trust, assurance-based trust, trust collapse, and trust recovery, as well as Japanese social systems and norms according to Hendry, Sugimoto, Doi, Nakane, Lebra, Markus and Kitayama, Benedict, and Befu. The live-action series Imawa no Kuni no Arisu Season 2 by Sato Shinsuke was used as the primary research source, and the series was observed intensively and repeatedly through the Netflix platform using various devices owned by the researcher. The findings of this research identified 33 data points of interpersonal trust in Arisu and Usagi. Assurance-based trust was the most dominant with 17 data points, followed by generalized trust with 11 data points, trust collapse with 3 data points, and trust recovery with 2 data points. The most dominant cultural and social norm factor was collectivism, followed by the concept of Wa (和), Amae (emotional dependency), and the structural norm of Senpai-Kohai. Interpersonal trust between Arisu and Usagi appeared most frequently in their interactions with each other. The interpersonal trust of Arisu and Usagi is displayed through interactions, actions, dialogue, and responses with each other as well as with other characters in dangerous situations. This research concludes that interpersonal trust is not the sole aspect in the formation of character traits, particularly in extreme situations, but rather that cultural factors and social norms also influence and are consistently displayed throughout the story. The findings of this research are expected to enrich the field of psychosocial literary studies, particularly in the analysis of character trust, as well as provide practical contributions to social life through the representation of various figures. Keywords: trust, interpersonal trust, psychosocial literature, Arisu Ryohei, Usagi Yuzuha, Imawa no Kuni no Arisu Season 2
