Abstract
***** This study aims to formulate a model of the popular imagination process of child writers in story writing by conceptualizing imagination as a process of consciousness. The focus of the study is directed toward the relationship between children’s lived experiences, the domain of popular culture as a space of symbolic mediation, and narrative cognitive structure as the mechanism that organizes experience into story. This study adopts an interpretivist paradigm with a qualitative approach. The research design integrates Husserlian phenomenology and Polkinghorne’s narrative approach. The research subjects are child writers aged 7–15 who actively write and publish stories. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, document analysis of children’s stories, and field notes, and were analyzed thematically using ATLAS.ti. The findings show that children writers’ experiences appear as selected and sedimented experiences that acquire narrative direction through affective orientation. The domain of popular culture functions as a symbolic field that provides figures, images, media, activities, and affective patterns closely related to children’s everyday lives. Narrative cognitive structure organizes these experiences and symbols through characters, settings, conflicts, and resolutions, allowing children’s stories to display structural regularity as well as variation in content. The structural testing indicates that experience serves as the central activating element of the model, while popular culture works more effectively when mediated by narrative cognitive structure. Based on these findings, this study formulates the Popular Imagination Process Model (IPOP) as an early stage of children’s narrative creativity, moving through imagining, feeling, mimicking, structuring, and story-writing. The IPOP Model functions as a substantive theory that describes, explains, identifies tendencies, and provides direction for facilitating children’s story writing
