Abstract

***** This study examined the representation of masculinity and the idealized man in Sabrina Carpenter's album Man's Best Friend (2025) using Halliday's transitivity system, grounded in Connell's (2005) theory of masculinity and Hall's (1997) theory of representation. A total of 494 clauses from twelve songs were classified into six process types. Material processes were the most dominant (33.6%), closely followed by Relational (32.2%) and Mental (21.1%), showing that masculinity was represented mainly through action and assigned qualities. The idealized man did not emerge through direct description, but as an implicit standard absent from the text, visible through the contrast between the male figures depicted and the qualities the female speaker consistently expected. This standard was defined by five characteristics: emotional maturity, responsibility, honest communication, consistency, and mutual partnership.
