Abstract
Penelitian ini berjudul “Fixated Desire and Gender Performativity in Lisa Jewell’s The Family Upstairs.” ***** This research is titled “Fixated Desire and Gender Performativity in Lisa Jewell’s The Family Upstairs.” This study focuses on analyzing the manifestations of fixated desire and gender performativity through the character of Henry Lamb in Lisa Jewell’s novel The Family Upstairs. Using descriptive-analytical methods, Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory, and Judith Butler’s theory of gender performativity, this study aims to examine how Henry’s internal fixation developed as a result of failed psychosexual development and how this led to the reconstruction of his gender identity. Freud’s concepts regarding the structure of the psyche, psychosexual development, and fixation are used to analyze the psychological causes behind Henry’s attachment to Phineas Thomsen. Butler’s concepts of stylized repetition, sedimentation, and melancholic incorporation are also employed to explore how this fixation is externalized through the performance of identity. The results of this study indicate that the moral void within the Lamb family and David Thomsen’s control prevented Henry from gaining the social structure necessary for healthy latent-stage development, leaving his libidinal energy without an outlet. As a result, this accumulated energy became permanently fixated on Phineas Thomsen as the only available object of desire. The traumatic rejection on the River Thames reinforced this fixation, transforming the desire to possess Phineas into a compulsive drive to become him through a mechanism of melancholic incorporation. This transformation manifested gradually through the compulsive writing of “I AM PHIN,” the legal adoption of Phineas’ name, and the surgical reconstruction of his facial features. Ultimately, Henry’s performative project proved structurally impossible because the discovery that Phineas was living a life completely detached from his fixation confirmed that no external transformation could resolve the internal fixation that dominated Henry’s entire life.
