Abstract

Terutama pada aspek kecemasan.*****Final-year students writing their theses often face various academic demands that can lead to psychological distress. On the other hand, excessive social media use can develop into social media addiction, becoming a form of escape from academic pressure. This study aims to describe psychological distress in students from the Faculty of Education, State University of Jakarta, who are working on their theses, based on their level of social media addiction. This study used a quantitative approach with descriptive methods. The study population was 1,214 students from the Faculty of Education, State University of Jakarta, graduating from the 2019-2022 intake, who were working on their theses. The study sample of 301 respondents was determined using the Slovin formula with proportionate stratified random sampling. The instruments used were the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-42) developed by Lovibond and Lovibond to measure psychological distress, and the Social Media Addiction Scale developed by Al-Menayes to measure social media addiction. Validity test results showed all items in both instruments were valid, while reliability test results showed a Cronbach's Alpha value of 0.985 for the DASS-42 and 0.966 for the Social Media Addiction scale, indicating excellent reliability for both instruments. The results showed that of the 301 respondents, 102 students fell into the high social media addiction category, and their levels of psychological distress were further analyzed. In this group, depression was dominated by the Extremely Severe category (71 respondents (69.91%), anxiety was dominated by the Extremely Severe category (95 respondents (93.13%), and stress was dominated by the Extremely Severe category (52 respondents (50.98%). These results indicate that students with high levels of social media addiction tend to experience high to very high levels of psychological distress, particularly in the anxiety category.
