Abstract

Florentina Br Ginting, S.Pd., M.Pd. The Development of an Intervention Medium Using Box Pleats on Shirts for Individuals with Autism and Sensory Disorders. Thesis. Jakarta: Fashion Design Education Study Program, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Negeri Jakarta, 2026. This study aimed to develop a tactile intervention medium using box pleats on a shirt for individuals with autism and sensory processing disorders and to evaluate the developed product. The study was motivated by the need for a sensory intervention medium that is integrated into daily dressing activities to support users' tactile stimulation needs in a functional, safe, and aesthetically appropriate manner. This research employed a Research and Development (R&D) method using the Design thinking model, which consists of five stages: empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test. The Functional and Aesthetic (FEA) Consumer Needs Model was used as the framework for analyzing user needs. The research subjects were students at SLB C Kyriakon, and data were collected through observations, interviews with therapists, validation by five expert panelists, and product trials. The study produced five shirt prototypes incorporating box pleats as tactile intervention elements, with placements on the chest pocket, center front, chest area, lower chest and cuffs, and shoulder to sleeve. The evaluation results indicated that the product achieved a Very Appropriate category with an overall score of 90.69%, while both the Functional and Aesthetic aspects obtained scores above 87%. The findings also demonstrated that box pleats have the potential to function as a tactile intervention medium, and that the placement of the embellishments on the shirt influences the product's appropriateness by providing tactile interaction that is accessible, safe, and does not interfere with the user's dressing activities. This study concludes that shirts incorporating box pleats can serve as an alternative tactile intervention medium for individuals with autism and sensory processing disorders while contributing to the development of adaptive clothing that integrates sensory intervention into everyday apparel.
