Abstract

**** This study aims to examine the role of cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression as moderators in the relationship between perceived crowding and informal social control among residents of Kelurahan Johar Baru, Jakarta Pusat. A quantitative approach using survey method was employed with 107 respondents selected through purposive sampling. Instruments included an adapted Willingness to Intervene scale (Sampson et al., 1997), a single-item measure for perceived crowding, and the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (Gross & John, 2003), with data analyzed using Model 1 Process Hayes. Results indicated that perceived crowding had no significant direct effect on informal social control (β = −0.282; p = 0.186). However, both moderation hypotheses were supported: cognitive reappraisal weakened the negative effect of perceived crowding on informal social control (β = −0.110; p = 0.016), whereas expressive suppression strengthened it (β = −0.182; p = 0.009). These findings suggest that individual responses to environmental pressure are substantially determined by the emotion regulation strategy employed.
