Abstract

This undergraduate thesis is entitled "Politeness Strategies as Depicted by The Selected Characters in The Order (2024)" This study aims to identify the types of politeness strategies used by the selected characters in The Order (2024) and to explain how these strategies are realized in their interactions. While previous studies have mainly focused on identifying politeness strategies in film dialogues, this study further examines their realization by considering the contextual variables proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987), namely power, social distance, and rank of imposition. This study employed a qualitative descriptive method. The data consisted of verbal utterances produced by four selected characters: Terry Husk, Joanne Carney, Jamie Bowen, and Bob Mathews. The findings show that all four politeness strategies are employed in the film. Bald-on-record is the most dominant strategy (40.8%), followed by positive politeness (24.5%), off-record (18.4%), and negative politeness (16.3%). The findings also indicate that the realization of politeness strategies is influenced by contextual variables, particularly differences in power, social distance, and the level of imposition, which shape the characters' linguistic choices across different interactional situations. Overall, this study demonstrates that politeness strategies in The Order (2024) are used dynamically according to the communicative context and the relationships between the characters.
