Abstract

***** This study aims to describe the linguistic forms and delivery strategies of directive speech acts in the film Stand by Me Doraemon through a pragmatic approach. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method. The research data consisted of 39 utterances containing illocutionary force of commands. The data were collected through observation and note-taking techniques by considering linguistic forms, speakers, hearers, situational contexts, relationships between characters, and the intended meanings conveyed in communication. The analysis was conducted based on Austin’s theory to identify the illocutionary force of commands, Namatame’s theory (1996:102–124) to describe the linguistic forms of directive speech acts, and Searle’s theory (1979) to describe direct and indirect speech act strategies. The results showed that directive speech acts in the film Stand by Me Doraemon were realized through five linguistic forms, namely imperative verbs or 命令形 (meireikei), ~なさい (-nasai), ~て (-te), ~てごらん (-te goran), and ~てください(-te kudasai). The ~て (-te) form was the most dominant form, with 16 data or 41.0%, followed by 命令形 (meireikei) with 9 data or 23.1%, and ~なさい (-nasai) with 6 data or 15.4%. Based on the delivery strategies, 35 data or 89.7% were categorized as direct strategies, while 4 data or 10.3% were categorized as indirect strategies. The dominance of direct strategies was influenced by the close relationships between characters and the informal communication situations. The results indicate that the use of directive speech acts in Japanese is influenced not only by linguistic forms but also by pragmatic contexts, social relationships, and the speaker’s communicative purposes.
