Abstract

***** This study aims to describe conflictive function speech acts based on Leech’s (1993) theory, classify the meaning of illocutionary speech acts with conflictive functions based on Searle’s (1976) theory, and explain the politeness strategies of speech acts with conflictive functions based on Brown and Levinson’s (1987) theory. The research object, the drama Sora wo Kakeru Yodaka, depicts a conflict between characters and bullying. The approach used in this study is a qualitative descriptive method, with data collection Simak Bebas Libat Cakap technique and pragmatic analysis technique. The results of the study found 23 speech acts of conflictive function, including 4 data of threatening speech acts, 2 accusing speech acts, 7 cursing speech acts, and 10 reprimanding speech acts. In addition, the illocutionary forms found are of 6 directive speech acts, 6 assertive speech acts, 4 commissive speech acts, and 7 expressive speech acts. The data show that speech acts with a reprimanding function and expressive illocutionary acts were found most frequently because the drama were set in the closest social environment, namely family and friends. Furthermore, based on the politeness strategy category, 13 data were found for bald-on record FTA, 10 data for off record FTA, and no positive or negative politeness were found on this research. This is because, when performing speech acts with a conflictive function, speakers disregard politeness and do not minimize threats to the listener’s face.
