Abstract
***** This study analyzes the psychological development of the main character in Freida McFadden’s novel "The Crash” using Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic approach and Erik Erikson’s psychosocial development theory. The purpose of this study is to examine how the main character’s past trauma influences her journey of self-discovery and identity transformation within the novel. The research method used is a descriptive qualitative method with a narrative text analysis approach. Research data were obtained from dialogues, monologues, narratives, and significant events in the novel that represent the main character’s thoughts, feelings, and experiences. The data were analyzed using Freud’s concept of personality structure, which includes the Id, Ego, and Superego, as well as the levels of consciousness (Conscious, Preconscious, and Unconscious), and Erikson’s psychosocial development theory, focusing on the sixth stage: Intimacy vs. Isolation. The results of the study indicate that the main character experiences internal conflict due to traumatic experiences that affect his emotional state and decision-making processes when facing various situations that threaten his safety. The interaction between the Id, Ego, and Superego is evident in various situations that require the main character to survive, confront fear, and consider moral values. Trauma stored at the unconscious level influences the character’s thoughts and behavior, later emerging at the preconscious and conscious levels through the processes of reflection, recollection, and decision-making. Furthermore, the main character experiences a conflict between intimacy vs isolation, evident in her difficulty forming close relationships with others and her tendency to isolate herself. This study shows that the main character’s trauma shapes an identity transformation that illustrates how the main character copes with suffering through self-awareness, resilience, and personal growth in the novel.
