Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan dan menganalisis representasi Simbol seni (Art Symbol) dalam Tari Topeng Gengges di Sanggar Tari Gandes Pamantes berdasarkan teori simbol seni (Art Symbol) Susanne K. Langer. Fokus penelitian diarahkan pada bagaimana unsur-unsur pertunjukan, seperti topeng, gerak, musik, tata rias dan busana, serta kain properti, membentuk simbol-simbol artistik yang merepresentasikan karakter dan makna dalam Tari Topeng Gengges. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif. Data diperoleh melalui observasi, wawancara, dan dokumentasi terhadap proses latihan serta pertunjukan Tari Topeng Gengges di Sanggar Tari Gandes Pamantes. Analisis data dilakukan melalui tahapan reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa teori Art Symbol Susanne K. Langer relevan digunakan untuk memahami makna simbolik yang terkandung dalam Tari Topeng Gengges. Topeng tidak hanya berfungsi sebagai properti pertunjukan, tetapi menjadi simbol utama yang merepresentasikan perubahan karakter penari. Gerak tari menjadi simbol ekspresi karakter remaja yang dinamis, musik memperkuat suasana emosional pertunjukan, sedangkan tata rias, busana, dan warna kain berfungsi sebagai simbol visual yang memperjelas identitas serta karakter yang dibangun dalam pertunjukan. Keseluruhan unsur tersebut saling berkaitan membentuk satu kesatuan simbol artistik yang mengungkapkan gagasan, pengalaman batin, dan nilai estetis karya tari. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, Tari Topeng Gengges tidak hanya berfungsi sebagai seni pertunjukan, tetapi juga sebagai karya seni yang menyampaikan makna melalui simbol-simbol artistik. Melalui teori Susanne K. Langer, Tari Topeng Gengges dipahami sebagai bentuk ekspresi simbolik yang menghadirkan pengalaman estetik, sehingga setiap unsur pertunjukan memiliki makna yang saling mendukung dalam menyampaikan konsep karya secara utuh. Langer, Representasi Simbol, Tari Topeng Gengges.******* This study aims to describe and analyze the representation of Art Symbols in the Topeng Gengges Dance at Gandes Pamantes Dance Studio based on Susanne K. Langer's theory of Art Symbols. The study focuses on how the performance elements, including the mask, dance movements, music, makeup and costume, and cloth property, function as artistic symbols representing the characters and meanings embodied in the Topeng Gengges Dance. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation of the rehearsal and performance processes of the Topeng Gengges Dance at Gandes Pamantes Dance Studio. The data were analyzed through the stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that Susanne K. Langer's Art Symbol theory is relevant for interpreting the symbolic meanings embodied in the Topeng Gengges Dance. The mask functions not merely as a performance property but also as the primary symbol representing the transformation of the dancer's character. The dance movements symbolize the expressive and dynamic characteristics of adolescents, while the music reinforces the emotional atmosphere of the performance. In addition, the makeup, costumes, and the colors of the cloth properties function as visual symbols that strengthen the identity and characterization presented in the performance. These performance elements are interconnected and form a unified artistic symbol that conveys the choreographer's ideas, inner experiences, and the aesthetic values of the dance. Based on the findings, the Topeng Gengges Dance serves not only as a performing art but also as an artwork that communicates meaning through artistic symbols. From the perspective of Susanne K. Langer's theory, the Topeng Gengges Dance can be understood as a form of symbolic expression that presents aesthetic experience, in which every performance element contributes to conveying the artistic concept of the work as an integrated whole.
