Abstract

****** This study aims to examine the relationship between parents’ emotional availability and emotion regulation strategies, including cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression among high school students in the Kebayoran Lama subdistrict. The study employed a quantitative, correlational approach with a sample of 385 high school students in grades 10–11, selected through convenience sampling. Data were collected using the Lum Emotional Availability of Parents (LEAP) instrument and the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ). Descriptive analysis results showed that the level of parents’ emotional availability fell into the moderate category (65.5%). Regarding emotion regulation strategies, moderate levels were found for cognitive reappraisal (70.4%) and expressive suppression (67.8%). Data analysis using Spearman’s rho correlation test showed a significant positive relationship between parents’ emotional availability and the cognitive reappraisal emotion regulation strategy, with a correlation coefficient of 0.224, whereas the relationship between parents’ emotional availability and expressive suppression was not significant. These findings confirm that the higher the perceived emotional availability of parents, the greater the tendency for students to use adaptive emotion regulation strategies, specifically cognitive reappraisal. The results of this study have implications for the development of guidance and counseling services focused on strengthening adaptive emotion regulation strategies, improving communication and emotional relationships with parents, and promoting healthy ways of expressing emotions.
