Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan dan menganalisis nilai-nilai kemanusiaan yang terkandung dalam novel Fi> Baladi Ar-Rija>l karya Hisham Matar, serta mengeksplorasi sejauh mana para tokoh berpegang teguh pada nilai-nilai tersebut di bawah tekanan dan penderitaan politik. Penelitian ini berlandaskan pada teori pendidikan Islam Abdurrahman An-Nahlawi, yang mengklasifikasikan nilai-nilai kemanusiaan ke dalam tiga bagian: hubungan dengan Tuhan, hubungan dengan diri sendiri, dan hubungan dengan orang lain. Untuk mencapai tujuan tersebut, penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif dalam bentuk studi kepustakaan (library research) dengan pendekatan analisis isi (content analysis). Data dikumpulkan melalui teknik pembacaan berulang (baik pada novel versi bahasa Inggris maupun bahasa Arab) dan pencatatan. Data kemudian dianalisis untuk mengklasifikasikan bukti-bukti ke dalam tiga dimensi nilai. Keabsahan data divalidasi menggunakan teknik triangulasi sumber untuk menjamin akurasi dan objektivitas. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa nilai-nilai kemanusiaan bermanifestasi secara intens dalam novel, dengan total keseluruhan mencapai 190 data. Data tersebut terdistribusi sebagai berikut: (1) Hubungan manusia dengan Tuhan ditemukan sebanyak 21 data. (2) Hubungan manusia dengan diri sendiri ditemukan sebanyak 24 data. (3) Hubungan manusia dengan orang lain merupakan bagian yang mendominasi dengan 145 data, yang mencakup nilai kasih sayang, toleransi, afeksi, kesetaraan, pemaafan, kebijaksanaan, dan solidaritas. Hasil ini secara tegas menjawab rumusan masalah kedua; novel ini membuktikan bahwa kekejaman kediktatoran tidak mampu menghapus fitrah kemanusiaan. Sebaliknya, para karakter menggunakan nilai-nilai moral—seperti afeksi timbal balik dan solidaritas—sebagai mekanisme vital untuk perlawanan psikologis dan melindungi keluarga dari kehancuran, menegaskan bahwa nilai-nilai kemanusiaan justru menguat di hadapan ketidakadilan. Penelitian ini melengkapi studi sebelumnya dengan membuktikan fleksibilitas teori pendidikan Islam dalam menganalisis sastra Arab modern, di mana nilai-nilai tersebut berfungsi sebagai instrumen penyelamat mental dalam menghadapi upaya rezim yang ingin membongkar struktur moral masyarakat. ***** This study aims to describe and analyze the human values manifested in the novel Fi> Baladi Ar-Rija>l (In the Country of Men) by Hisham Matar, and to explore the extent to which the characters adhere to these values under political pressure and distress. The research is grounded in Abdurrahman An-Nahlawi's Islamic education theory, which classifies human values into three dimensions: relationship with God, relationship with oneself, and relationship with others. To achieve these objectives, a descriptive qualitative method was employed in the form of library research using a content analysis approach. Data were collected through repeated reading (of both the English and Arabic versions of the novel) and note-taking techniques. The data were then analyzed to classify the evidence into the three value dimensions. Data validity was verified using source triangulation to ensure accuracy and objectivity. The results indicate that human values are intensely manifested in the novel, with a grand total of 190 data instances. The evidence is distributed as follows: (1) Human relationship with God is found in 21 data instances. (2) Human relationship with oneself is found in 24 data instances. (3) Human relationship with others is the most dominant category with 145 data instances, encompassing the values of compassion, tolerance, affection, equality, forgiveness, wisdom, and solidarity. These findings conclusively answer the second research question; the novel proves that the cruelty of dictatorship could not erase pure human nature. Instead, the characters utilized moral values—such as mutual affection and solidarity—as vital mechanisms for psychological resistance and to protect the family entity from collapse, confirming that human values strengthen in the face of injustice. This research complements previous studies by proving the flexibility of Islamic educational theories in analyzing modern Arabic literature, demonstrating that these values serve as psychological survival tools against regimes attempting to dismantle the moral structure of society.
